Let me tell you a secret that will change how you feel about family photos with a toddler in tow.
You cannot out-prepare a two-year-old. And you were never supposed to.
As a family photographer in Huntsville, I’ve photographed hundreds of little ones in every mood — glowing, giggling, sobbing into a goldfish cracker. The secret to beautiful family photos isn’t perfect behavior. It’s setting everyone up — parents and toddler alike — to feel safe, warm, and utterly themselves.
Here’s how we do it at Honey & Haze.

1. Schedule Around Their Rhythm, Not Yours
If your session runs during naptime, you will lose. Every time.
Book your family photos for the one-to-two-hour window after a full nap and a real meal. For most North Alabama toddlers, that’s about an hour before sunset in late spring, summer, and early fall — which also happens to be the most beautiful light of the day. The universe planned this.
2. Feed Them Before (and Bring Snacks That Don’t Stain)
An empty belly is not a cooperative belly. Feed something substantial 30 minutes before the session, then pack snacks that are:
- Not red, blue, purple, or orange (no juice, no popsicles)
- Not sticky
- Not crumbly enough to end up on the outfit
Our go-tos: plain puffs, vanilla yogurt melts, banana, plain crackers, and a tiny bit of shredded cheese.
3. Keep the Wardrobe Comfortable and Familiar
Brand new shoes are a tantrum waiting to happen. So are itchy collars, tight waistbands, and anything that “just needs to stay on for one hour.”
Let your toddler break in their outfit a few times before the session. Go neutral, soft, and tactile — linen, cotton, muted tones. It will photograph like a dream, and your little one will feel like themselves.
4. Tell Them It’s an Adventure, Not a Photoshoot
“Pictures” is a loaded word for a two-year-old. “Let’s go explore a pretty garden and see if we can find bunnies” is a much better invitation.
Talk about the session as an adventure — a walk through a meadow, a garden hide-and-seek, a trip to the “secret forest.” Bring that imaginative energy with you, and your toddler will, too.
5. Let Them Warm Up to the Photographer

The first 10 minutes of any session with a toddler should be about connection, not photos. When I meet a little one, I get low. I whisper. I give them control — “do you want to show me your favorite flower?” The camera stays quiet until they decide they’d like to be in it.
If your toddler is shy, that’s okay. If they’re wary, that’s okay. We build trust before we build a gallery.
6. Release Expectations for “Everyone Looking at the Camera”
Here’s the luxury secret: the best toddler portraits aren’t the ones where they’re looking at the camera.
They’re the ones where you are looking at your toddler. Laughing with them. Chasing them. Whispering a silly song into their hair. Those are the photos you’ll print at poster-size.
Let go of the posed, smiling-into-the-lens shot as your goal. We’ll get a few. But we won’t chase them.
7. Bring a Lovey, Not a Bribe
A favorite blanket, a small stuffed animal, or a beloved book can anchor your toddler between frames. Bribes (especially sugary ones) tend to create a performance economy — and performances are hard to photograph warmly.
8. Pack a Full Outfit Change

For juice, for spaghetti, for mud, for mystery. Always pack a second outfit. Then pack a spare for yourself, too — toddlers sometimes share their snacks in unconventional ways.
9. Keep the Session Shorter Than You Think
At Honey & Haze, our family sessions with little ones are intentionally paced. We move slowly. We take breaks. And we rarely go longer than 60–75 minutes — because more time rarely means better photos when a toddler is involved.
10. Trust Your Photographer’s Calm
If your little one melts down mid-session, please don’t apologize. We’ve seen it. We’re unbothered. We’ll wait it out with a snack and a song, and often the most tender photo of the day comes right after the tears.
