I believe every season holds a kind of beauty worth photographing. But if you’re planning your first (or next) outdoor family session in North Alabama, some months really do shine a little brighter than others.
Here’s an honest, luxurious look at what each season offers — and when I recommend booking your Honey & Haze family session to catch our region at its most breathtaking.
Fall (Late September – Early November): The Golden Standard

If you ask any North Alabama family photographer when our light is most forgiving, our trees most cinematic, and our weather most bearable — fall wins. Every time.
What you can expect:
- Warm golden hour that lingers longer than in summer
- Foliage peaks in Monte Sano, Green Mountain, and the Cathedral Caverns area from late October into the first week of November
- Cool enough for sweaters and layered looks
- Generally dry, with soft overcast afternoons when the weather cooperates
The tradeoff? Fall books fast. If you want a weekend session in October, we recommend booking four to six months in advance.
Spring (Mid-March – Late May): Fresh and Soft

Spring in North Alabama feels like a long exhale — and photographs just as tenderly. Dogwoods bloom in late March, azaleas take over in April, and wildflower meadows open up around Madison, Athens, and Decatur by mid-May.
Best for: growing families, motherhood sessions, milestone sessions, and anyone who loves pastels and blush tones.
Watch for: pollen (yes, it’s in the photos — we clean it up gently in editing), humidity as May approaches, and unpredictable rain.
Summer (June – Mid-September): Golden Hour Only, Please

Summer in Alabama is gorgeous — but only after 6:30 p.m. Daytime sessions are harsh, hot, and hard on little ones.
If you want outdoor family photos in summer, we recommend:
- Scheduling 90 minutes before sunset
- Choosing shaded locations (Huntsville Botanical Gardens, wooded areas of Monte Sano, tree-lined family farms)
- Opting for breathable linens in neutral tones
- Keeping the session short — 45 to 60 minutes
Summer can feel deeply romantic and nostalgic when done right — it’s our season for wildflower fields, porch-light glow, and barefoot grandparent portraits.
Winter (November – February): Quiet and Intimate

Winter is my quiet favorite.
North Alabama winters are mild enough to shoot outdoors most months, and the light during December and January is some of the most beautiful of the year — soft, slanted, cinematic.
Winter sessions are ideal for:
- Intimate family portraits in textured wool, camel, cream, and deep green
- New year “where we stand” family milestone photos
- Holiday card shoots (book by early October)
- Pregnancy announcements and motherhood sessions that feel cozy and candlelit
Watch for: rapid sunset (as early as 4:45 p.m. in December) and the occasional chilly front — we recommend booking warmer afternoons and pulling out blankets and hot cocoa for the little ones.
So, What’s the Absolute Best Month?
If I had to choose one month for outdoor family photos in Huntsville, AL, I’d whisper October — specifically the second and third week, when foliage is peaking and temperatures settle into the 60s and 70s.
A very close second: mid-April, when the landscape is soft, green, and full of early bloom.
But the real answer? The best time of year for family photos is whenever your family is. A new baby. A milestone birthday. The year your daughter turns five and still asks to be carried. Don’t wait for perfect light — call us, and we’ll build the session around your family’s season, whatever it is.
