Why your summer vacation is the perfect time to invest in photos that actually look like you
Let me ask you something honest: how many photos from your last vacation are actually on your walls?
Probably not many. And not because the trip wasn’t beautiful — but because nobody with intention was behind the camera. You came home with a full camera roll and maybe one or two shots that could have been something, if the lighting had been better or if everyone had been looking.
What if this summer was different?
Summer travel is the most underrated photography opportunity of the year.
Think about it — you’re already dressed with care. You’re already relaxed, present, and doing something worth remembering. The only thing missing is someone intentional behind the lens who knows how to find the moment before it disappears.
Whether you’re heading to the Gulf Coast, spending a weekend in Nashville, exploring North Georgia, or keeping it close to home here in Madison and Huntsville — the summer light is golden and the setting is already built. All you have to bring is your family.
So what does a travel session actually look like?
Nothing stiff. Nothing forced. A travel session is roughly an hour of your family doing exactly what you do — walking, exploring, laughing at something only your people think is funny — while I stay back and document what unfolds naturally.
Rather than posing you against a backdrop, my goal is to get out of your way and let your family be your family. What you’ll walk away with are images that feel like your actual life — warm, real, and full of the specific details that make this season yours.
Here’s what I need from you to make it happen.
Reach out early. Travel sessions require coordination on both ends — especially if you’re heading outside North Alabama or Southern Tennessee — and the planning takes time. Location scouting, timing golden hour, working around your itinerary: all of it comes together better when we’re not rushing.
If you’re staying local, don’t count yourself out. Some of the most breathtaking sessions I’ve done have happened right here — Burritt on the Mountain at dusk, the Tennessee River catching the last of the afternoon light, a quiet field in Madison that looked like it was made for photographs.
Here’s the truth about summer photos.
Summer is short. Kids grow fast. And your family in this exact season — with these ages, these faces, this particular beautiful chaos — will never exist again quite like this.
The women who reach out and tell me they wish they’d done this sooner are always the same ones who almost didn’t book because summer felt like the wrong time. But here’s what I know after years of doing this: there is no wrong time. There is only now, and what you choose to do with it.
