A real conversation about booking timelines, fall availability, and why waiting costs you more than money
Every year, without fail, I receive the same message sometime in late September.
“Hey! I know it’s probably too late, but I was wondering if you had any fall availability?”
And every year, without fail, my fall calendar is already closed.
That’s not something I say to create panic. Instead, I’m sharing it because if you’re reading this before July or August, you are in a genuinely good position right now — and I don’t want you to miss it.
Here’s why fall books the way it does.
Fall is the most requested season in photography, full stop. The light softens. The air cools. The trees do something that honestly never gets old. And because families are also managing school schedules, sports seasons, and the beginning of holiday planning all at once, the available windows for sessions are narrower than they appear on a calendar.
When I open fall booking — usually in late spring or early summer — a limited number of weekend slots become available. Because I keep my calendar intentional, every family gets my full presence and best work. That means no overbooking, which also means dates disappear fast. Most years, fall is fully booked before the end of July.
So what should you actually do right now?
If October or November portraits are what you want — the golden leaves, the sweater weather, the soft late-afternoon light — send your inquiry now. Not in August. Not when you feel a chill in the air. Now, while the dates are still there.
Once you’re on the books, we lock in your date, talk through your vision, and get everything set well in advance. No scrambling. No last-minute disappointment. Just a beautiful session waiting for you on the other side of summer.
What fall sessions at Honey & Haze actually look like
Documentary and warm — that’s the heartbeat of everything I do. Rather than lining your family up and asking everyone to smile at me, I’m watching the in-between moments. The way your son reaches for his dad’s hand without thinking. The way your daughter spins in her dress before she gets self-conscious. The way your family actually feels in this season of life, not the way they perform for a camera.
In editing, I bring in rich, golden fall tones — warm without going orange, moody without going dark. The result is the kind of image that looks incredible on a canvas above your fireplace and just as good as your phone lock screen.
A word about Christmas cards while we’re here.
Most of my fall clients are also thinking about Christmas cards, and if that’s you, here’s the timeline you need to know. Print labs and card companies have order cutoffs, and most families want cards in hand by early December. Working backward from there means your gallery needs to be ready by late October or early November at the latest — which means your session needs to happen in September or early October.
September feels far away right now. On the calendar, though, it genuinely isn’t.
